We pre-build the PPD files with foomatic-compiledb and serve only the content of the web pages from a (reduced) MySQL database.

Instead of feeding the complete Foomatic XML data into the MySQL database and from this generate the PPD files which are identical with the ones we find in Linux distributions (they usually create them with the foomatic-compiledb script directly from the XML data which comes with the foomatic-db-engine package) we do the same as the distributions do also on the server. The UI of the web app did not change, but there are changes in the internal functionality.

As the old server did not receive a system upgrade for many years there were a lot of problems with the compatibility of the code (SQL and PHP) with the new, modern server.įortunately, the people there, especially Violet Kurtz and Lance Albertson, both from the OSUOSL, helped a lot on doing this migration by doing the needed code changes.
